Perhaps the question is better put as, "What is the goal and purpose of education?  Given that, what kind of education should we provide to the next generation?"

Perhaps this question is on my mind because I’m just beginning to read Plato’s Republic with my students, and the question of education looms large in that work.

In any event, I found Ross Hirschmann’s essay at this morning, and found it quite relevant to the topic.  Mr. Hirschmann comes from a different religious tradition than I do, but I think he raises some issues that it’s important for adults of any religious tradition to consider.
